Email Update – Dayton’s Unusual Decisions
State Representative Tom Hackbarth
June 3, 2011
Dear Neighbor,
Gov. Dayton’s erratic actions are making it very difficult to put a budget in place.
Two announcements he made this week are the icing on the cake. He said he is refusing to allow his commissioners to meet with our legislative leaders, who want to keep working on a solution. Just as bad, the governor also said he wants to bring in a mediator to make decisions on the budget.
This shows just what we’re dealing with in Gov. Dayton. When things get really difficult, he hands the reins to someone else; he did it as a senator and he is doing it again here. In this case, he wants a non-elected official to step in and do the job Minnesota’s voters sent him to do.
I suggest the governor come back down to planet earth so we can get some real work done on our budget. This is serious business and a state shutdown will have the governor's name written all over it if we don’t have a plan in place by the end of this month.
We already sent him a responsible plan to balance our budget without raising taxes, but he vetoed our proposals. Now he’s just milking the clock to give his big-money marketers more time to launch class warfare and convince Minnesotans that our top earners are getting off easy and should pay more in taxes.
Maybe a better idea would be for Dayton to tell us what he wants to do with that extra $1.8 billion he wants to spend. I still wouldn’t approve of it, but it would at least fill in some blanks and make for some good conversation. I guess he figures raising our taxes is what’s really important and can’t be bothered to figure out how it should be spent.
It will be interesting to see how things develop from here. The good news is House and Senate leaders were meeting with Dayton today and, with any luck, they made some headway in helping snap the governor back to reality.
Sincerely,
Tom
