State Representative
Nearly two months ago Governor Pawlenty unveiled his budget proposal that would have solved the near $5 billion budget deficit. This week we were told by the state economist the state budget deficit had grown to $6.3 billion. After the money the federal government will give us from the stimulus package is taken into consideration the state deficit will sit at $4.5 billion. While I have great concerns about taking the federal stimulus money, the gap we have left could be filled quickly.
The Governor’s budget could still be enacted into law and solve this current budget deficit. It would also work to put Minnesota back on the path of prosperity and growth. The plan would help get Minnesotans back to work and make our state a better place for businesses, both large and small, to grow and expand.
By passing his budget we could balance the state budget without placing more of a burden on you. Minnesotans across the state are struggling right now. With 75,000 jobs lost over the past year people are having a hard time making ends meet and paying the bills. The last thing we should do in this situation is to take even more money out of your pockets.
In the two months since the Governor unveiled his budget proposal the Democrats in charge have not taken action that would solve the budget. The Democrat Majority has not even offered a plan to solve the budget deficit. So I renew my calls for the Governor’s proposal to be accepted. I am willing to stand up and cast my vote for the plan right now. By passing this budget we could finish our work in St. Paul in short order. We could adjourn quickly and our part-time legislators could get back to their real jobs.
The best part of the plan would be protecting your pockets. As I have said before your wallets are the safest when the Legislature is not in Session. The sooner we can finish our job here the sooner we can go home. That means your wallets are that much safer.
