This week Governor Pawlenty showed leadership by proposing a budget for our state. The budget proposal focuses on some great priorities and most importantly balances the budget. It is great to have a plan on the table at last.
The budget deficit was announced two months ago, and for the past two months the Democrats in charge of the Legislature have not provided any plans to solve this budget deficit. They offer criticism of the process, but offer no plans. Even today their only plan was to have a discussion about it.
The Legislature could finish its job within a month by passing this plan. We can bring about some changes in government that are needed. We can reduce the costs of government by combining services and allowing government on all levels to join together to buy things they use every day.
We can bring more jobs to Minnesota as well. Part of the proposal would create incentives for small businesses to grow and expand their business. In our area we have many small business owners that are hurting. By allowing them to reinvest in their business they can keep people in their jobs and keep the lights on in their business. It would help to revitalize the small businesses that help make up our community.
By reforming how the government works, which this proposal makes some great steps towards, the plan presented today allows us to have more stability in our state government. Instead of the highs and lows our state budget has seen we can have a budget that is not so volatile. Stability in the government budget is good, and can be achieved if we focus on priorities.
Let’s accept this plan, and let’s go home. After all that’s when your wallet is the safest.
