To The Editor,
Over the past few weeks I have received a few phone calls from concerned constituents about the changes to the Green Acres program. There seems to have been confusion on the deadlines, and I would like to take a moment to clear up that confusion.
By January 2, 2009 you must indicate your INTENT in writing to the county assessor’s office of your desire to withdraw any land from Green Acres. This letter is nonbinding. It simply gives the assessor an opportunity to tell you what you would owe. If you are already enrolled in Green Acres and you do nothing, your land will be grandfathered in.
If you think you may sell your land within the next year or two, it would be wise to submit your letter of intent. If you do this you will only be subject to the 3-year payback, rather than the 7-year payback.
You have until summer of 2009 to finalize your decision.
I hope this helps to clear up any confusion. If you still have questions please contact the county assessor’s office.
Sincerely,
Tom Hackbarth
State Representative
