Hello from the State Capitol!
Spending Targets Set
The House Ways and Means Committee approved a resolution setting a
nearly $34.6 billion spending target for the 2008-09 biennium. That is
approximately $126 million more than the governors proposed spending
target.
Bonding Bill Disclosed
A bill making its way through committee could give Minnesota's
colleges and universities $52 million to do much needed repairs to
buildings. This money is part of a larger $255 million bonding bill
that was heard by the House Capital Investment Finance Committee.
Conservation Corps Funding
The Minnesota Conservation Corps Summer Youth Program brings together
15-18 year olds from across the state to learn skills and about each
other while performing natural resource and conservation projects across
the state, such as habitat improvement, planting activities and trail
construction. Under the proposal, which was laid over for possible
inclusion in the omnibus bill, the Corps may receive $38,000 in the
upcoming biennium to hire deaf interpreters to assist with the program.
Honoring Veterans of WWII
Dedication of the World War II Veterans Memorial on the State Capitol
grounds will happen on June 9th of this year. Under a bill sent to the
House Finance Committee this week, $500,000 would be dedicated to help
defray costs for World War II veterans who wanted to attend the
dedication ceremony. The money would be used for transportation, meals
and lodging of the veterans.
Sincerely,
Tom
