Elk River has always been the leader of energy production in Minnesota. The city has a long history of producing energy. It is the site of the first rural nuclear power plant in the United States. Later on that plant was converted to burn refuse derived fuel. All of energy advances earned the city of Elk River to be designated the “Energy City” by the Minnesota Environmental Initiative back in 1997.
This session I have introduced a House File 86 which would designate the city of Elk River as the State Energy City. This recognition is one that Elk River well deserves, and I hope to see this bill make it to the Governors desk this session. The city is worthy of the title, and it truly is the Energy City of Minnesota.
Recently this bill was heard in the Local Government and Metropolitan Affairs, and I had the opportunity to testify on this bill along with three of the commissioners from the Energy City Commission. These great members of our community discussed the rich history of Elk River, and made the strong case for Elk River deserving this recognition.
I am happy to report this bill was passed and sent to the General Register where I am hopeful the bill will be voted upon by the full House in a timely manner.
