Saint Paul – After more than five years of work, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed a bill authored by Representative Tom Hackbarth (R – Cedar) proposing an amendment to the Minnesota constitution related to funding for the state’s natural resources. The bill dedicates 3/16 of one percent of state sales tax, or approximately $139 million, to fish and wildlife conservation, state park and trail enhancements, a clean water fund, and arts and humanities.
Beginning July 1, 2009, 60 percent of the sales tax dedication, or approximately $83 million, will be allocated to the Game & Fish Preservation Fund to provide hunter and angler access and to enhance, improve and protect the state’s fish and wildlife.
“This legislation has been a long time coming for Minnesota,” Hackbarth said. “This is a necessary step toward the recovery and preservation of the precious natural resources our state is known for.”
A clean water fund will receive 30 percent, or approximately $41.5 million, for the protection and restoration of lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands and groundwater. Minnesota’s parks and trails system will receive five percent, or approximately $6.9 million, as will the arts and public broadcasting.
“As the public’s awareness of the need for conservation measures increases,” Hackbarth said, “I am proud to be a member of a government that responds aggressively and quickly. The passage of this legislation is a reflection of our dedication to a clean, beautiful Minnesota.”
