NEWS RELEASE

REP. HACKBARTH’S CONSTITUENTS SPENT $3 MILLION ON LOTTERY IN FISCAL 2005

ST. PAUL – A recent report from the Minnesota State Lottery shows that constituents in Rep. Tom Hackbarth’s House district like to spend a dollar or two on the state lottery. Through fiscal year 2005 (July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2005), area folks plunked down some $3,088,583 on lottery games.

Rep. Hackbarth’s House District 48A includes Elk River, Burns Township, Oak Grove, Bethel and East Bethel.

“People in my district and statewide like to play the lottery,” Hackbarth said. “The big winners of course are state environmental and fish and game programs that are funded by the lottery.”

Of the total sales, $1,900,257 was spent on scratch-off tickets and $1,188,326 was spent on online lottery games. Of that $3 million-plus spent on tickets, some $1,359,097 was returned to players in prize money. Hackbarth said it’s important to remember that people often buy tickets where they work or shop, so not all sales represent purchases made by local residents.

The local lottery sales in the district resulted in contributions of $211,877 to the state’s Environmental and Natural Resources Trust Fund and $446,609 to the state’s general fund. Also the Game & Fish fund administered by the DNR received $72,582.

Statewide, fiscal 2005 lottery sales totaled $405 million, some 5 percent more than the prior year. Of that, $28 million went to the Environmental and Natural Resources Trust Fund. The trust fund receives about 7 cents of every dollar spent on lottery tickets.

Since its inception in April 1990, the Minnesota State Lottery has transferred more than $1.35 billion to the state.
