ST. PAUL – State Representative Ron Erhardt, R-Edina, traveled to Washington, D.C. last week to take part in the White House Transportation Legislative Leadership Summit. Erhardt is the current Vice Chair and former Chair of the House Transportation Committee.
Recently-released results from the Metropolitan Council’s annual metro area survey show that traffic congestion continues to be one of the most talked about concern among Twin Cities residents. Erhardt said the Twin Cities is not alone in its frustration with congestion and that the summit focused on sharing ideas that work and exploring innovations that could someday be put in place.
“At the state level, we need to support projects that clearly result in less congestion. We have to do the simple things to get the most out of what we already have and be willing to consider cutting-edge ideas that take advantage of modern technology to improve the system,” Erhardt said. Some of the easier things to do, Erhardt said, are making sure lights and ramp meters are timed properly to avoid backups. Another way is to improve incident response times, which has shown success in reducing delays in the Seattle area.
Erhardt represented the Minnesota House and was joined by State Senator Steve Murphy, DFL-Red Wing, and State Senator Ann Rest, DFL-New Hope. The summit featured a Keynote speech from U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters, followed by the governors of Indiana and Pennsylvania discussing their state’s congestion relief efforts.
