Dear Friend:
Thank you for contacting me during the legislative session regarding your opposition to the proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages (HF 6). Now that the hectic pace of the special session has ended, I wanted to follow-up with you about this important issue.
As you probably know, the proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages did not come up during the recently concluded special session, which I was glad to see. There were far many more important matters to deal with than enshrining discrimination in our state constitution.
Having said that, I have no doubt that the issue will resurface next year. Since the House of Representatives passed HF 6 during the regular legislative session, the issue now can be considered in the Senate during the 2006 session. HF 6 does not need to re-pass the House of Representatives.
As someone who has always been a strong supporter of equal rights for members of the GLBT community, I just wanted to drop you this note to reiterate my opposition to HF 6. Please know that I will continue to do what I can to prevent its passage in the Senate.
I hope this assures you that I am committed to the principle of equal rights for all people.
Sincerely,
Jim Davnie
