LEGISLATURE SHOULD PASS COMPREHENSIVE CONSUMER PROTECTION BILL
Davnie calls for passage of "The Clean Credit & Identity Theft Protection Act"
SAINT PAUL—In response to recent news that as many as 40 million Americans have been exposed to the risk of credit damage and identity theft due to a security breach at Card Systems Solutions Inc., Rep. Jim Davnie stated that the legislature should have acted during the regular session to pass comprehensive consumer protection legislation.
"We took some important steps this year to help empower consumers to protect themselves," said Davnie. "That said, there are many stronger steps we can take to help shield consumers from these potentially criminal exploits that can have devastating results."
Rep. Davnie authored HF1973, "The Clean Credit and identity Theft Protection Act." The bill would have allowed consumers to place a protective freeze on their security reports in the event their private information had been breached, offered further protections of the privacy of consumers social security numbers, and empowered consumers to be able to take steps to clear their name and record should their personal information be used by a criminal for fraudulent purposes.
In the meantime, Rep. Davnie offered suggestion on how consumers can be proactive in protecting themselves from identity theft.
"Call your credit card company and ask them if your personal information was amongst that of the 40 million consumers put at risk and ask them what they are doing to ensure the safety of your personal information," said Davnie. "In addition, consumers should periodically monitor their credit report for suspicious activity."
Due to the passage of an amendment to the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, Minnesotans are now able to receive a free copy of their credit report once a year at www.annualcreditreport.com, or by calling 1-877-322-8228. Rep. Davnie says to beware of other websites that offer a credit report only after selling a service they may or may not be needed.
