REP. DAVNIE LAUDS BONDING MONEY FOR MINNEHAHA CREEK AND WABUN PARK

State Representative Jim Davnie (DFL-Minneapolis) is pleased that funding for restoration projects at Minnehaha Creek and Wabun Park were included in the recently passed capital investment or 'bonding bill.'
"The state funding in the bill will move both of these important projects forward," said Davnie. "Repairing the Minnehaha creek bank and completing Wabun Park are critical to our community and our quality of life."
The $717 million bonding bill includes $2.9 million to help with restoration projects around the Glen area of Minnehaha Creek. The funds will be used to repair, restore and stabilize the shoreline and restore fish and other natural habitat that was damaged as a result of heavy rains several years ago. Working with multiple partners including the Minneapolis Vets Home, the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, the Army Corp of Engineers and other state agencies, the funds will aid storm water retention and creek bank management at or below the Vets Home.
The money directed to the metro parks account will allow for completion of Wabun Park facilities renovation. Improvements to the Minnehaha Falls overlook area; the adjacent picnic areas, trails, park roads and parking lots are all included in the Park Board plan.
Governor Pawlenty signed the bill into law Monday, preserving the Minneapolis projects while trimming $208 million from the bill.
"The good news is that Minneapolis projects escaped the Governor's veto pen relatively unscathed," said Davnie. "However, his decision against Central Corridor is a tremendous blow to our vision for a comprehensive regional transit system to connect our core cities and suburbs. If that vision has any hope of becoming a reality this session, it's up to the Governor to bring it back."
