REPRESENTATIVE DAVNIE ON RACIAL JUSTICE HONOR ROLL Organizing Apprenticeship Project honors Davnie for role in advancing racial equity – gives Governor and Legislature a "D"

The Organizing Apprenticeship Project (OAP) has released its Minnesota Legislative Report Card on Racial Equity, naming State Representative Jim Davnie to its Racial Justice honor roll. The report, which evaluates the performance of state policy makers on legislation and policies affecting communities of color, gave both the Governor and the Legislature as a whole an overall grade of "D."
Rep. Davnie (DFL-Minneapolis) was honored for his work to reduce racial disparities in the areas of health care, education, economic status and civil rights in communities of color and American Indians.
"Working to reduce racial disparities in our communities and our state is some of the most important I'll do during my time at the State Capitol," said Davnie. "While racial disparities are pervasive in our state, they need not be permanent."
According to the OAP there is a glaring racial fault line in Minnesota that is growing wider over time. However, some positive trends did emerge including:
· An increase to 62% the number of bills passed in 2007 that were supported by OAP to reduce racial disparities, up from 37% a year ago.
· There were 65 legislators listed on the honor roll and honorable mention list, more that the previous year's total of 26.
· 100% of the bills that addressed American Indian Tribal Sovereignty were passed into law.

"I'm encouraged that we're starting to address issues of race in a more positive way, but we still have a long way to go before every Minnesotan achieves true equality," said Davnie. "It will take leadership and it will take each of us to take ownership of our role in creating a state that provides equity and opportunity for all."
