REP. DAVIDS: NO TAX INCREASES IN HOUSE REPUBLICAN BUDGET PLAN

ST. PAUL – State Representative Greg Davids (R-Preston) said a House Republican budget proposal unveiled on March 10 accomplishes two goals: No tax increases, and prioritized spending.

“I believe this plan is a reasonable approach,” Davids said. “We cannot continue spending more than we take in. Lawmakers are tired of it and the public is tired of it, so it’s time to take the painful but necessary action.”

Davids noted that reforms and spending reductions are highly utilized in the Republican plan, and help eliminate most of Minnesota’s projected $5.1 billion budget deficit. In all, $3.6 billion is cut from future spending – or a 13.1 percent reduction from projected levels.

Davids said it was critical to fund priorities and not the bureaucracy in this proposal, as nursing homes are protected and K-12 classrooms, Minnesota’s courts, and veterans programs are all held harmless. He also noted the plan does not raise taxes, but it does provide tax relief to the middle class which would help stimulate the economy.

“When you face a $5.1 billion deficit, tough choices have to be made,” Davids said. “It is my hope that by taking a few lumps now, our economy will have turned around by the next budget cycle.”
