NEWS RELEASE

REP. DAVIDS RESPONDS TO STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS

ST. PAUL – State Representative Greg Davids (R-Preston) said Governor Mark Dayton gave an interesting State of the State Address on the floor of the Minnesota House of Representative recently.

Davids said the governor outlined many areas where he wants to see state government grow, but other than raising state income taxes, did not share any other details as to how he would eliminate Minnesota’s $6.2 billion budget deficit.

“The Governor expressed great disappointment that the decisions made by previous politicians have forced him to address this historic budget shortfall,” Davids said. “I wholeheartedly agree with him. If our previous legislative leadership would have enacted some permanent spending reductions over the past four years, it would have greatly lessened our current budget woes. We are now left to make up for their failures.”

Davids said he also agrees with Governor Dayton’s priority to bring more jobs to Minnesota. But Davids disagrees with Dayton’s ideas to increase government borrowing, create more debt, and increase taxes.

Davids, chairman of the powerful Minnesota House Taxes Committee, said the keys to balancing the budget will be reducing automatic spending increases and forcing government to live within its means – not by adopting unnecessary tax increases.

“Minnesota will actually collect 5 percent more than it did over the last biennium, but the problem is state spending is projected to grow by 27 percent,” Davids said. “Within a $32 billion budget, we should be able to prioritize education, transportation, and public safety without forcing unnecessary tax increases on hard working Minnesotans.”
