NEWS RELEASE

REP. DAVIDS OPPOSES HOUSE MAJORITY TAX INCREASE PROPOSAL

ST. PAUL – State Representative Greg Davids (R-Preston) said he is disappointed with a proposal recently sponsored and approved by the Minnesota House majority that would raise taxes by $2 billion and impact almost every Minnesotan.

“The bill is an attack on every man, woman, and child in the state,” Davids said. “The majority wants to take more money from private sector businesses and working families because it can’t keep government spending under control.”

Davids said there are dozens of areas where Minnesotans would feel the tax hikes if the bill became law. Besides the obvious hike in income taxes, smokers would pay more for cigarettes. Those who consume alcohol would pay more for each drink. Those who download music would pay a higher price for each song. Those wishing to sell their boat or snowmobile would pay state sales taxes.

Davids also noted that Minnesotans would also lose popular tax credits under the majority’s proposal, as it wants to repeal tax credits for K-12 education expenses; dependent care expenses; and long-term care insurance premiums. The bill also eliminates itemized deductions for charitable contributions, property taxes and mortgage interest.

It would also end the successful Job Opportunity Building Zones (JOBZ) program which has created thousands of quality jobs in rural Minnesota, and allow counties to impose a half-cent sales tax.

“A recession is not the time to raise taxes,” Davids said. “This tax hike bill is a good example of the problems our House majority has with feeding the beast. We are fortunate that Governor Pawlenty will veto this bill.”
