NEWS RELEASE

REP. DAVIDS TO AUTHOR BILL PROTECTING HISTORIC FORESTVILLE

ST. PAUL – Following news that the Minnesota Historical Society plans to close Historic Forestville due to financial constraints, State Representative Greg Davids (R-Preston) will sponsor funding legislation that could allow the site to remain open.

“I’m extremely disappointed that the Historical Society would choose to close Forestville,” Davids said. “I’ll be working extremely hard the rest of this session to ensure that this does not happen.”

Rep. Davids is the Republican Lead of the Cultural Heritage Finance Division which oversees the programs which receive funding from our new 3/8 cent sales tax increase.

Davids said nearly 20 percent of these funds must be dedicated to programs relating to arts and heritage. He believes Forestville, which reenacts life prior to 1900, more than qualifies for this revenue.

“Minnesotans voted to increase the state sales tax last November in order to properly fund destinations like Forestville, so I think it’s time to utilize some of these funds so we can keep southeastern Minnesota’s only historic site available for future generations,” Davids said.

Davids noted that Senator Sharon Ropes will likely author a similar proposal in the Minnesota Senate.
