ST. PAUL – By a 93-40 margin, the Minnesota House of Representatives has approved capital investment legislation that borrows money to fund construction projects across Minnesota. State Representative Greg Davids (R-Preston) voted against the measure.
“We’re already facing a deficit of $6.3 billion and this would only make things worse,” Davids said. “Southeastern Minnesota projects are nearly non-existent in this proposal, and there isn’t nearly enough money to address flood prevention or the current problems being seen in the Red River Valley.”
Rep. Davids did try to address this problem by offering an amendment that would have increased flood mitigation funding from $12.7 million to $35.565, but it was defeated by a vote of 81-52.
“Flood prevention and recovery is a true emergency and this proposal would have boosted funding for both,” Davids noted. “I’m disappointed more lawmakers didn’t support this amendment.”
A House/Senate conference committee will now meet to create a compromise bonding plan that can be approved by both bodies. Once that occurs, it will be sent to Governor Pawlenty for his signature.
