Legislative Update

Legislative Update - October 20, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

Even though the legislature is not in session, there is still work that continues during the interim in preparation for next year’s session. As a member of the House Capital Investment Committee, I have been working with legislators of both parties during the interim to visit locations around the state that are seeking bonding appropriations to improve and maintain infrastructure of regional or state wide importance. This coming year, 2018, is traditionally known as the Capital Investment or “bonding” year at the Legislature. Infrastructure investments are generally made with the passage of a bonding bill the second year of the state’s two year budget cycle.

Bonding bills support essential infrastructure across Minnesota. A robust bonding bill creates thousands of jobs and repairs infrastructure for cities, colleges, parks, and other assets in every region of the state. I have been grateful to work with members of our community to make the case for strong investments in our state and regional economy.

The Capital Investment Committee recently concluded our tour of proposed bonding projects by visiting sites in the Twin Cities Metropolitan area. Earlier this year we conducted tours of sites in Southern, Western, Northern, and Central Minnesota communities.

I’m including a few photos below from our final two days of site visits:

We learned more about the aging lock and dam infrastructure on the Mississippi River.

Here I’m discussing the needs of the Minnesota Humanities Center with staff and other members.

Learning about the needs of the Minneapolis Emergency Operations Center from local emergency personnel.

Seeing how bonding dollars would be used to improve laboratory classrooms at St. Paul College.

A group photo of legislators who toured historic Pillsbury Hall on the University of Minnesota campus. The beautiful building is in desperate need of modernizing renovations to continue being useful.

Here we are descending 150ft below street level to see how bonding funds help to improve storm water infrastructure in the City of Minneapolis.
