State Representative Joe Atkins (DFL – Inver Grove Heights), Senator Jim Metzen (DFL – Inver Grover Heights) and Mike Rothman, Commissioner of the Department of Commerce, will hold a town hall to discuss financial issues for Minnesota seniors on Friday, April 26, 2013 from 9:00-11:00 AM. The town hall meeting will be held in Community Room 1 of the Veterans Memorial Community Center in Inver Grove Heights (8055 Barbara Ave, Inver Grove Hts, MN 55077).

Legislators and Commissioner Rothman will provide seniors with a legislative update and discussion surrounding senior financial literacy issues — including scams and frauds that target Minnesota seniors. April is Financial Literacy Month across Minnesota.

“Proper management of finances and awareness of these terrible scams can mean the difference between an enjoyable retirement and heartbreak,” said Rep. Atkins. “Minnesotans are good and trusting people, meaning our seniors are targeted by these scams more than most and the scams are becoming more sophisticated. I strongly encourage area seniors to attend if they can.”

“We cannot allow people who have worked hard for a lifetime to be taken advantage of in their later years,” said Senator Metzen. “More complicated schemes by those who prey on the elderly require greater commitment by those elected to protect the people of Minnesota.”

“Senior protection from fraud and scams is even more critical as every day in Minnesota more Baby Boomers hit retirement age,” said Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman.  “Senior citizens hold nearly 70 percent of the nation’s wealth and crooks know it.  This is the time to gain the financial education to protect our parents and grandparents from falling victim to scams and fraud.”

State Representatives Laurie Halverson (DFL – Eagan) and Joe Atkins (DFL – Inver Grove Heights) will be holding a joint town hall meeting on Thursday, February 21, 2013 from 6:00-7:00 pm in the City Council chambers at the Eagan Municipal Center (3830 Pilot Knob Rd. Eagan, MN 55122).

Minnesota Management and Budget Commissioner Jim Schowalter will deliver a brief presentation on the state budget, before Reps. Halverson and Atkins open up the meeting for questions and a moderated discussion.

Minnesota is facing a $1.1 billion budget deficit and still owes its K-12 schools another $1.1 billion.

“Minnesota is facing a number of challenges going forward and your input is essential as we work to craft a balanced budget that invests in our future and economic growth,” said Rep. Halverson. “I encourage constituents to attend and share their thoughts and ideas on how we keep Minnesota a great place to work, live, and raise a family.”

“Hearing from our constituents is important to us,” said Rep. Atkins. “Our budget needs to set our state on a long-term path to success and reflect the priorities of Minnesotans. Hearing from Minnesotans is absolutely essential to getting the job done.”
