Optometrists are receiving payment rejections for some of the services they provide with new technology because current law does not include these treatments.

SF508 would update the types of services that optometrists may provide, and that they may consequently bill for and be paid by insurance and government reimbursement programs.
Rep. Will Morgan (DFL-Burnsville) and Sen. Melissa Wiklund (DFL-Bloomington) sponsor the bill, which the Senate amended and returned to the House. The House concurred with the technical amendment and re-passed the bill 134-0 on Monday. The bill now awaits action by the governor.
Updated services eligible for payment would include the use of autorefractors or other automated testing devices and prescribing ocular exercises or rehabilitative vision care. The bill is supported by several statewide groups, including the Optometric Association, Academy of Opthalmology, Occupational Therapy Association and the Council of Health Plans, according to Morgan.
