House leaders look ahead to 2013 session

House Speaker-designate Paul Thissen (DFL-Mpls) and House Minority leader-elect Kurt Daudt (R-Crown) both say the state’s projected $1.1 billion budget shortfall stands atop their to-do list ahead of the 2013 legislative session that is less than a week away.

Both, however, offered differing paths to tackling the issue when they sat down recently to discuss the upcoming session that begins Jan. 8. Check out what both legislators had to say in advance of the coming session in the videos below.

Thissen, the Speaker-designate after the DFL recaptured control of both houses of the Legislature in the  November elections, said “asking the wealthiest Minnesotans to pay a little more is something we’ll strongly consider.”

Daudt said his caucus believes “there are more efficiencies” in state spending legislators can find.

“Just because we’ve got a $1.1 billion deficit doesn’t mean we need to run right out to the taxpayers and ask for more money,” Daudt said.
