Higher Education

Budget bill passes

The House passed a bill April 29 that will provide $2.6 billion for higher education in the upcoming biennium.

Sponsored by Rep. Doug Stang (R-Cold Spring), HF1568/SF1511* would provide $1.12 billion to the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system, $1.1 billion to the University of Minnesota, $369.8 million to the Higher Education Services Office, and $2.95 million to the Mayo Medical Foundation.

The bill, which was amended in the House Ways and Means Committee to put the House language into the Senate file, now returns to the Senate where Sen. Sandy Pappas (DFL-St. Paul) is the sponsor. The Senate passed its version of the bill, which totals nearly $97 million more in spending, April 23 on a 34-31 vote.

The bill equates to a $191 million drop from current biennium funding for the university, $176 million decrease for MnSCU, and a $324,000 drop for the Mayo foundation.

Conversely, the Higher Education Services Office will receive a $54 million increase in funding, mostly for the state grant program.
