Assistant Director/Editor - House Public Information Services


A full-time position is available in the Minnesota House of Representatives as Assistant Director/Editor for the nonpartisan Public Information Services office. Public Information Services supports the mission of the House of Representatives through news and information services, including: publications, photography, information services and television coverage.

Requirements of the position include: strong planning, editing, proofreading, writing, and news and information production management skills. Must have strong organizational abilities, and be able to work closely with the director to set and meet department deadlines. This position requires: full knowledge and familiarity with AP style; proven abilities with Microsoft Office word processing and database software; and full knowledge and familiarity with social media platforms. Must have a demonstrated ability to adapt to changing technology and systems. BA or BS in communications and/or journalism strongly preferred.

Responsibilities include: supervising and editing nonpartisan news and information efforts, including daily and end-of-session news summaries; compiling and organizing data for directories and lists; developing, editing and managing department Web content; supervising temporary writing staff; working with the director in managing office staff and duties; and being able to manage the department in the absence of the director.

Must work well with the elected officials, legislative staff, the public and the media. Must have a good understanding of state government and the legislative process. Must perform all duties in a nonpartisan manner. Must possess strong interpersonal communications skills, as well as conflict management and resolution skills. Must be able to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends, in order to meet the responsibilities of this position. This is a full-time position with excellent benefits. Competitive salary, commensurate with experience. This position has an anticipated start date of June 5, 2017.
