Chief Sergeant-at-Arms - Sergeant at Arms


Full-time nonpartisan position with benefits supervising the Sergeant-At-Arms Department for the Minnesota House of Representatives.

This position functions as the liaison with Capitol Security; provides advice to House leadership on matters involving security, office space and overall plant management; works with other House department directors to resolve a variety of physical, security and administrative issues concerning the House; coordinates and directs Sergeant’s staff during House sessions, committee hearings, etc.; works closely with law enforcement entities, public and private groups and individuals to explain or coordinate proposed programs; and oversees the in-house printing and facility services.

Candidates must currently hold or have held a full-time license by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), for a minimum of ten years to be eligible to apply; equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in criminal justice, police science, public administration or a related field. Supervisory experience in the police service, equivalent to the level of Sergeant or above is highly desirable; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position. Experience in cooperative working relationships and mutual aide agreements with representatives of other local public safety departments.

This position requires skill in crisis intervention techniques (CIT), for dealing with and solving problems presented in person and over the telephone often when relations may be confrontational; demonstrated ability to effectively respond to members, co-workers, the public; proven ability to supervise projects and work teams; standard of conduct and work performance including confidentiality and privacy requirements; and the ability to perform departmental administrative duties, such as administration and policy and procedure development. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a variety of people essential. Knowledge of the legislative process a plus. Must be available to work long and irregular hours and be up to date on first aid and CPR.
