The Minnesota House of Representatives Educational Programs Office is pleased to announce that preparations for the 2011 Internship Program are underway, and we are ready to begin accepting applications. Intern placement will begin on a rolling basis in mid-November. Interns can expect to start in early February.
Duties and Responsibilities
Aside from being able to use their knowledge and talents in a professional setting, Minnesota House of Representatives interns are given the opportunity to acquire new skills and gain further knowledge of the political process. Throughout the course of an internship, participants are asked to handle a wide variety of duties essential to the legislative process and designed to provide them with a valuable educational experience. Some of these responsibilities include:
The Minnesota House of Representatives offers interns a rewarding and volunteer based educational experience. Currently, we do not provide interns with a stipend or compensation for their services.
Application and Placement
The Minnesota House of Representatives Internship Program offers internships during the course of regular session and we begin accepting applications in the fall of each year. Though we do not set a firm application deadline, as applications are accepted on a rolling basis, applicants are encouraged to submit their application materials starting in mid-November. This allows Educational Programs staff enough time to review and place interns with prospective Members.
Prospective interns are placed with legislators and staff according to the interests and goals of each individual applicant. By identifying an intern's interests and goals, we hope not only to ensure that the educational needs of the student are effectively met, but also to try to accommodate the practical needs of individual legislators and staff.
Although we do not formally offer internships outside of the regular legislative session, students interested in obtaining internships during the interim are encouraged to contact the Education Programs Office regarding alternative arrangements.
