Punch-out time for high schoolers would be 11 p.m., House proposes
The House on Monday passed a bill 105-21 that would update certain labor laws by removing outdated language, adding new provisions to combative sports regulations and changing employment hours for high school students.
Rep. Jason Rarick (R-Pine City) and Sen. Mike Goggin (R-Red Wing) sponsor HF1204/SF1457* that now moves to the governor. It was passed 65-0 by the Senate April 27.
One provision would bar any high school student from working past 11 p.m. on a school night, a prohibition currently extended only to those 18 years old. If the student wanted to work between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. before a school day, they would have to provide a written request to the employer.
Other changes include adding the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts into statutes governing combative sports and changing those events’ fee schedules.
