Child protection task force starts crafting legislative agenda

The Legislative Task Force on Child Protection held its first interim meeting Tuesday.

Created by the 2015 Legislature, the eight-member task force is charged with reviewing child protection efforts and recommend changes.

The day's agenda items included a review of legislation passed last session, including grant programs, and a discussion of the task force’s priorities and goals for the future.

Rep. Ron Kresha (R-Little Falls) co-chairs the task force with Sen. Kathy Sheran (DFL-Mankato). He pressed members to raise awareness of children failing to reach their potential and to thoughtfully consider what can be legislatively accomplished to strengthen child protection given a shorter 2016 session.

The task force plans to meet next Aug. 25.
