Faribault hospital board could meet less under bill OK’d by House

A Greater Minnesota hospital board would be allowed to meet as little as twice per year under a bill passed Wednesday by the House.

Established under a 1963 special law, the board of the District One Hospital in Faribault is required by state statute to meet monthly. OK’d by a 128-0 vote, HF1427 — sponsored by Rep. Brian Daniels (R-Faribault) — would amend that law, requiring the board to meet fewer times each year.

The bill now goes to the Senate, where Sen. Vicki Jensen (DFL-Owatonna) is the sponsor.

The reason for the requested change? Things are going so smoothly following a recent merger with the Allina Health hospital system there isn’t enough to discuss to warrant monthly meetings, Daniels said.

The board consists of nine members appointed by a committee of elected officials representing the municipalities in the hospital district: the cities of Faribault, Nerstrand and Morristown; and the townships of Wheeling, Cannon City, Wells, Shieldsville, Morristown, Warsaw, Walcott and Richland.
