Hibbing public utilities commission could expand membership

Change may be on the way for the Hibbing public utilities commission as the House voted 89-40 Friday to pass HF3357/SF3131*. The bill now goes to the governor.

Sponsored by Rep. Carly Melin (DFL-Hibbing) and Sen. David Tomassoni (DFL-Chisholm), the bill would allow the Hibbing PUC to expand from three to five members; establish staggered terms for the additional members; and provides for the commission to elect a member to serve as chair for no more than two consecutive years.

It also changes a seat on the Hibbing City Council from a ward to an at-large position and fixes a technical error regarding biomass electric energy in the area.

“Thank you for taking the time to hear this bill that’s important to my community,” Melin said.
